During his fellowship in the ERC project “GLORE“, the historian Mátyás Mervay worked on a way to communicate the results of his research on the journalist Ladislaus Frank to a broad public. He succeeded in embedding micro-historical-biographical aspects in a global-historical context and visualising them in the form of an immersive storymap.

“In 1960, in communist Hungary, a 73-year-old returned emigrant published his memoir I Fled to Shanghai (Sanghajba menekültem) about his adventurous flight from Nazi Austria to wartime China. Being one of the ca. 20,000 Central European Jews who survived the Holocaust in Shanghai, Ladislaus Frank (1890-1965) recalled his epic journey to the “Pearl of the Orient” through colonial Asia.”
